VODICI - the baptism of Jesus Christ -19 January

Also known as Bogojavlenje ("Apparition of Christ"), the Feast of Vodici (literally "Feast of Water"). On 19 January, it is celebrated that Jesus was baptised by St John the Baptist in the waters of the Jordan River. Baptism in the Orthodox Church represents a spiritual birth and the beginning of human life in faith. Therefore, the godfather is considered the spiritual parent of the baptised and close relative. This feast day ends not only the 12 unbaptised days, but also the cycle of celebrations associated with Badnik, Christmas, New Year (Vasilitsa) and so on.

The celebrations have two segments and last for two days - the first on 19 January is called "Mashki Vodici" (Male Vodici), and the second on 20 January is called "Zhenski Vodici" (Female Vodici).

The ritual symbolises the entry of Christ into Jordan. The most visited rituals take place in Skopje and Ohrid. The air and water are cold, yet believers are inspired to jump in and swim to find the cross. This Orthodox tradition is very specific to Macedonia - don't miss it.
