Money
The currency of Macedonia is the Macedonian denar (MKD). Banknotes are available in notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 MKD. 1 € = 61 den. Up-to-date information on ATMs at a certain location can be found at
mastercard.nl/en-nl/consumers/locate-an-atm.html
or visa.com/atmlocator.
Withdrawing money is usually cheaper with a bank card than with a credit card. Banks and bureaux de change exchange money. Hotels usually change at a less favorable rate than a bank.
When you go inland, make sure you have enough cash with you. Macedonia is one of the cheapest countries in Europe.
Tipping is often 10% of the bill.
Exchange Macedonian money or spend it before leaving. Elsewhere the Macedonian denar is difficult or impossible to exchange to other currencies.
